Unpleasant spirituality

Unpleasant spirituality

2021-12-11 SH

Long and Learned by the philosopher Jules Evans. Just a chapter of something bigger. I’ll admit I didn’t read it to the end. I got stucked in my own thoughts. This unabashed elitism…

And I think that this is, among other things, what can be so shabby and repugnant, unsubstantiated, with contemporary esoteric holistic new age spirituality. A hundred years ago, things like hiearchies, coterie, ûbermensch ideals, etc. were in time. It isn’t anymore.

“Since about 1900 the better stocks have not been replacing their numbers, while the stupider and less healthy have been more than replacing theirs. Unless there is a change in the public mind every rank above the lowest must degenerate and, as inferior but push up into its gaps, degenerate more and more quickly.”

— WB Yeats, 1930

It’s such a big subject, that perhaps you shouldn’t even bother with. A mystery you just should leave behind? It easily gets into an emotional war of positions between for or against. […]

This is very thoughtful. I myself have great respect for Sigmund Freud, his thoughts on when religion can get problematic, but I do think Jones has an interesting point. […]

Why is it that so many people within “New Age spirituality” end up wrong & at odds with consensus on – in short – all the burning issues? 😳 First there was the climate […]
  • How to be on the right side of history?
What does it mean to “be on the wrong side of history”? And what does it look like when you are? Is it the Left Party [former Communist party in Sweden] that does not want to agree to […]
  • Conflictualities
I sat and thought about something. Because of things I’m reading too, of course. How fair, ethical is it to diagnose presidents from afar? And to what extent is it useful? Attempts are of […]
